A mix made after an AV night called 'A Few Old Tunes' to celebrate the release of Boards of Canada's 'Tomorrow's Harvest' album. I made videos for a lot of the material so decided to do my first solo video mix. There is also a follow up mix called 'T Is For Trapped' but no accompanying video mix exists as yet.
Coldcut meets The Orb (The Return Trip)
Info
-
Matt and Jon, Alex Paterson and Youth convening at Butterfly studio on the anniversary of JFK‘s assassination along with Coldcut studio accomplice Dor Wand and got down to it. The resulting session produced over 3 hours worth of material and I immediately volunteered to take on the edit job to sculpt it into the shape needed for a Solid Steel mix.
Luckily they had recorded everything to multi-track and just before Xmas 2012 I sat down to construct a 2 hour show from the chinese puzzle in front of me. After sifting, editing, compressing and discarding over a 3 to 4 week period I finally had something to send the guys. Matt came over to the studio to run through some finishing touches with fresh ears and we had 133 minutes of mind-melting madness.

For the Solid Steel 25th anniversary why don’t we get a rematch between Coldcut and the Orb? It’s no secret that their original New Year mash up from the end of 1991 is very high up on my list of greatest mixes ever and the thought of a new sound clash 21 years later was very appealing indeed.

DJ Food ‘Trip Out / Flashback Megamix’ (DJ Shadow mx1 & 2)
Info
-
The main 23 minute mix uses tracks, remixes, productions for others and the odd sample from Shadow's career to date. I took the lesser-known compilation track 'Flashback' as a theme to rapidly look back through his back catalogue.
-
Created for the XFM radio DJ Shadow special 20/09/12 – ‘Trip Out’ is a short mix using a lot of the ambient parts of Shadow’s productions. The ‘cover’ image is a homage to the KLF’s classic ‘Chill Out’ LP.

DJ Food, DJ Cheeba, DJ Moneyshot ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’
Info
-
DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and I had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way.
3 years in the making, ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ has each of us taking a third of the album to work on and combined our efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources we’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.

It was a real labour of love and I think I managed to get elements from all the tracks in there at some point including a remix of the single ‘Outside Your Doorway’ – see if you can untangle it all when you listen to the LP.

Various Artists ’64 Bar Challenge mix’
Info
-
The 64 Bar Challenge mix I did, 29 tracks in 52 minutes, the brief was for each track to be 110 beats per minute and last 64 bars. The series was originated on the Ninja Tune forum by Kovas and driven over 6 different challenges with entries from all over the world.
The quality was really high, largely leaning towards the electronic end of the spectrum, and with roughly 50/50 of the entrants being unsigned or never having released anything. Take a listen and see what you think and you can pledge for a vinyl version of the tracks on a compilation over on Beat Delete.

DJ Food & DK ‘Now, Look & Listen’
Info
-
Showcasing the AV mix DK and I performed live on 4 decks and 3 mixers post-'Now, Listen Again'. Using Serato's Video-SL plug-in for Scratch Live, we mix, scratch and blend the sound AND vision for each track.
Months were spent creating videos for each piece of music, either using the original source material or, in most cases sampling footage to create a new video entirely. We called it 'Video Turntablism', a way to visualize our DJ sets, first performed in late 2008 at Videocrash in London.

Various Artists ‘You Don’t Know’ (DJ Food’s 1000 Masks mix)
Info
-
This compilation was long overdue, the last one was way back in 2000 and the only label overview since had been 2006's Zen TV which was more of a retrospective look back than a current mission statement. There's still the Hip Hop, Jazz, Turntablism and Electronica the label became know for. But It's time to see what's behind the Ninja mask NOW - you'll hear drum n bass, folk, dubstep, glam rock, techno and other styles, none of which sum up the label completely.

Various Artists ‘Remember The Future?’
Info
-
Robots, mecha, androids, simulacra, I love them and, to commemorate the release of the first Transformers film in the summer of 2007 I put together a themed mix called 'Remember the Future' with the emphasis on the machine envisaged in the 50's, 60' and 70's when space travel was still a new wonder of the world. The intro was Transformer-themed and I was doing a gig with Hexstatic a few months later for the release of their album 'When Robots Go Bad'. I decided to make up some artwork to go with it so that I could sell some at the gig. Each one took around an hour to burn, print, score, cut and fold - I managed 75 in total.
-
The outer cover was a folding version of the Autobot logo (I wanted to do a Decepticon but it didn’t lend itself as well to the task in hand). This held the disc inside, each one of which was printed with a different image of a robot cribbed from an online gallery of bots made from found objects.
