A 3 page story appeared in the January ’92 issue of Heavy Metal magazine, credited to Greg Gallo and made entirely out of distorted photocopies. I’ve searched for more comic work by Gallo but found nothing, can anyone enlighten me on anything else he’s done please or was this a one-off? The twisted xeroxes remind me of WKinteract‘s work that sometimes utilises a similar method.
I get a Tom Phillips vibe off it for some reason, maybe the use of colour and aspects of the layout. It does strike me as a comic produced by a capital-A Artist, which is by no means a dig at dedicated comics artists – it just seems to come at things from a different angle. Elements like the panels piercing other panels on page one and the vertical motion / flow on the right of page three – it’s not earth-shattering innovation, but it’s certainly interesting enough to set it apart.
Hi Nick – Yes I found that Greg Gallo and sent him a message asking if he was the same artist but never received a reply. I’m interested as the composition on the panels is quite graphic and advanced, not your regular comic artist style really, much more design-led.
Good find (and question!). All I can turn up is an artist named Gregory Gallo, who would fit well enough time-wise (born in ’58) but makes no mention of this piece on his site at http://www.arteology.com/. He has some litho prints that I guess could be interpreted as developments of the themes and techniques in the story (see http://www.imagekind.com/artists/Arteology/digitalithos/fine-art-prints) but there’s nothing conclusive at all. He doesn’t seem to have pursued a career in comics, so the strip could be earlier graphical work that fell by the wayside.
