The I Am Legion custom toy show featuring bastardised versions of 3A toys opened yesterday at the 1:AM gallery in San Francisco, It’s at 1000 Howard St. SF, ca 94103 and is open until Dec 4th. See some of the amazing customizations in the gallery below and my previous post. All photos grabbed from posters on the 3A forum, especially RmOS1.0. Love the Hellboy one
I’ve seen The Monkees‘ ‘HEAD’ film too many times to count now but watching the DVD recently I saw some things I’d never seen before. As a bonus on the DVD there are 7 trailers and TV spots from around the world and the most intriguing is called ‘NY Action’. This looks like a collection of randomly selected clips assembled during filming before a final cut was made and, as the rapid fire scenes flashed past, I started to notice a couple of bits that I didn’t recognise from the film. On closer examination I picked out these snapshots from scenes that were left on the cutting room floor.
Opening credit:
This was certainly never meant to feature in the film, the clapperboard right before the opening scene with the general at the ticker tape. Also note that the film was called ‘Changes’ before ‘Head’
Ticker tape (alternate angle):
A lower down image of the ‘president’ as he makes his speech, notice in the second shot you can see the Monkees running up behind.
Band walk past Zappa with cow:
Not sure where this set of clips comes from but they seem to all be linked. It could have been inserted just after Davy karate chops the bald guard during the fight scene near the end, it would have come just before they walk through the wall onto the cowboy set I think.
Buggy chase alternate views:
The scene of the sheriff up on the gallows is shown from far back on the set, the worker on the plank is seen from a couple of different angles and there’s more footage of the buggy in the desert.
The whole band at the Coke machine:
Davy hits the coke machine and then drinks from a bottle, also an aerial shot of the whole band at the machine. This could have been from the end when they’re all in the desert running away from the tank.
Davy as an Arab:
From the belly dancing sequence. Also note that right at the beginning of this scene in the film; as one of the dancers swishes past Micky, part of her costume hits him right in the mouth and you can see him holding it and trying not to laugh.
Desert rider (alternate angle)
High up shot for the scene where the desert rider gallops up to Micky
Mike’s eyes close up:
I’m guessing these could have been from the scene where everything slows down and solarizes but are from before the effect was added. There’s also a shot of him ‘floating’ down the corridor and opening the red door Peter previously went through, pre-solarization.
Boxing match alternate angles / Sonny Liston:
The whole sequence of Micky getting into the ring and beating everyone up is seen from through the ropes instead of from above. Also as the police pile in to subdue him we see Peter get into the ring from below plus a close up of Sonny and a sequence of him skipping in the deserted boxing ring !?
Canteen fight:
Peter gets a pie in the face is seen from a different angle.
Micky scream:
There are a few frames where Micky seems to be yelling at the camera, I can’t figure out the background to place it though, it might be in the factory.
Monkees in the black box:
A few of scenes involve the band being shut inside a black room/box, once when they become dandruff, once when they get lifted away by a helicopter and once when Peter gives his long monologue. Here they’re all sitting around in different positions as though bored or waiting for something. This could have been inserted into the helicopter segment but it would have slowed down the action quite a bit.
Note that in the channel switching scene near the end of the film Micky is seen talking to someone off camera as if in an argument, those shots look like they come from the same scene.
Peter In the mirror:
This could come from the part known as ‘the cop’s dream’ or the kissing scene near the start of the film.
Black Rabi close up:
Looks like an outtake from the preacher scene just before the band go into the canteen.
Big Vic close ups:
First off Victor Mature reaches down to grab the buggy, in the film he just tries to stamp on it. Secondly there’s a clip of him sitting in the black room and then he gets up and walks off camera, laughing as he goes. This is the same scene as the one where the girl hoovers the ‘dandruff’ from his head.
This has been a ‘too much time on my hands’ post and was written back in 2005 would you believe? Go here for my rescore of the film, online for a limited time.
The gorgeous Ghost Box 7″ Study Series continues with a double header from Pye Corner Audio with The Advisory Circle – out in two weeks, pre-order it here.
Ever seen one of these? Nope, me neither, a digger named Nigel Smith mailed me these pictures wondering what it was he’d found many moons ago.
I said: “I’m presuming it’s an original promo / test pressing of Zen1?”
Jon More replied: “that is the original zen brakes”
Matt Black said: “its the test pressing. this is what I meant by the ORIGINAL original Ninja which I drew!”
Peter Quicke commented: “ha yes, first white label run, fond, vague memories although before my time of course”.
Nice find Nigel
I really like the look of this so pledged an amount, they are still a way off their target with only 6 days to go, maybe you can help? It looks like a great film. More info over at the Kickstarter page for the film, lots of different rewards for pledge amounts including a 7″ record, T-shirt and even a private party for the top pledges.

This version adds 5 tracks that were on the previous 3 vinyl EPs but didn’t make the cut for the CD album ‘proper’ + has full versions of tracks that were edited down for the regular version, up to 4 minutes more on one track. Some versions are only available on this edition as I remixed several older tracks for the album but edited them down for the final selection – this is your chance to be a completist.
For all those wondering where the vinyl is? Well, the three EPs released so far make up a version of the album (albeit an alternate universe one) and all come with nice poster covers and inner sleeves so, if you bought these then, you already have the album of sorts. That being said, there are different mixes, edits and the vocal version of GIANT on the CD and digital versions which aren’t yet on wax. We have ideas about that but I don’t want to jump the gun without things being set in stone. Ninja should be repressing some quantities of the earlier EPs so we’ll see what happens, don’t write a new vinyl version off just yet.

Just amazing. Melvin the Machine.com
Last month’s best of, the Studio One picture is in the Bitte Club in Milan, Italy, the figures are made entirely out of screws, the collage images are from the same club. The ripped faces and figures are inside the Case á Chocs club, Neuchatel, Switzerland where I played with Neneh Cherry as is the ceiling typography. The Tiny World photo of South East London is taken from the top of Greenwich Park.
The hunt continues, part 1 was on the Ninja Tune Soundcloud and part 2 was on the Clashmusic.com site. Part 3 is out there somewhere, you just need to find it…

Love this cover of JRocc‘s new single, artwork by Gustavo Eandi.

I’ll have one of those please, now they just need to reissue his children’s book ‘Henri’s Walk To Paris’ and I’ll be happy.
Postscript – apparently ‘Henri’s..’ is due for reissue in Feb 2012! Also this beautiful compilation of Bass film titles was put together by Ian Albinson of the Art of the Title website recently, in honor of the book being published.
I recently came across a couple of new postcard records, people are suddenly reviving old vinyl pressing techniques the likes of which I never thought I’d see again. The first one was by The Stepkids, a massive favourite of mine after only one album, on the excellent Stones Throw label, and came free with online orders of the new record. It’s a short exclusive track called ‘Bitter Bug’ and the grooves are cut right into the cardboard so the sound quality is not far short of dirt (but that’s not the point, it looks great).
The second one I chanced upon on Facebook and is the creation of Markus Oberndorfer as part of an art project called Lenscape#02 for which he created 33 copies. I was lucky enough to secure the last copy and the difference between this and the Stepkids one is that the grooves are cut into a transparent slice of plastic and the postcard is fixed to this.
I have several records like these and most get filed along with the flexi discs I collect as they are usually 5 or 7 inches in size and square. These postcards are, well, postcard sized and have the space to write a name and address on the back.
The incredible line work of Henry Flint from the inner sleeve of the ‘Magpies, Maps & Moons’ vinyl.
The 12″ EP and download, out Nov 7th, is available to preview and pre-order at the Ninja shop.
Henry’s book of ‘doodles’, ‘Broadcast’ is supposed to be released today but is still on pre-order at Amazon.
The Magpie Music mp3 treasure hunt continues today with the second mp3 available on a certain site, use your search engine to find it.
The first segment, ‘Finders Keepers’ was here, pretty close to home, the second won’t be so easy.
With one week away until the release of my ‘Magpies, Maps & Moons‘ EP Ninja are giving you the chance to download 5 different segments of the track ‘Magpie Music’ that I did with 2econd Class Citizen. This is a suite of tracks we made and then stitched together to form an 11 minute piece on the new EP and album, various tracks have been extracted from it and cleaned up to form little standalone DJ tracks for you to enjoy.
The only catch is, you have to find them, Magpie-like, and steal them from wherever they are hiding on the web using your computer’s search engine (incidentally, the new album’s title). The first one is up now, four more go online each day this week and the EP is released on Monday 7th November. Lots of exciting things happening on the lead up to this release at the moment, I’ll give all the info as each thing is confirmed but January is going to be packed at this rate.

Equinox Records out of Berlin have been around for a while and they currently have a sale on in their shop so I recently hoovered up some bits I fancied. The packaging and design aesthetic of the label is very strong, being overseen by the label head Gunter Stoppel aka DJ Scientist. There is a look of unbleached card, circular designs, B&W inner sleeve photography and a multitude of formats including colour and clear vinyl, 5″ and postcard records, cassettes and other oddities. It’s a varied roster, mainly concentrating on instrumental beats and electronica with a heavy leaning toward Hip Hop and sampling. Of course I would be first to recommend 2econd Class Citizen but the new David Vangel album is excellent as are releases by Davinci and Deckard amongst others.
